“Let them eat cake”: Part One

I don’t know whether you’ve realised this yet, but I love cake. I love food in general, but there’s nothing quite like a cup of tea and a good piece of cake.

I’ve recently been thinking about how memories and food go hand in hand; Nick and I’s two year “first time we met properly” anniversary has just been and gone, and a dubious looking cake played a big part in this meeting. I was curious; when has cake played a big part in other people’s lives? What memories do people associate with cake? So I asked some lovely, cake-obsessed Twitter folk two questions: “What is your favourite memory that involves cake?” and “What is your favourite type of cake?”

Becky (@wardrobee)
In 1985, for my 4th birthday, I wanted a ‘Care Bear’ birthday cake more than anything. My mum was happy to oblige by attempting to make one. It was far from perfect (especially compared to cakes available these days) but to me it was amazing.  Seeing that cake made me the happiest (and proudest) little girl in the world. It still remains in my memory as the best cake ever.

Favourite type of cake:
My favourite is always a chocolate fudge cake. ‘Why have fruit in cake when you can have chocolate?’ is my motto!

Little A’s Christening cake is my best cake memory because it was the first cake I had made in a long time and I wasn’t sure if I had fallen out of love with cake decorating. I designed it myself. Of course it was for a very special day, which makes the memory even fonder!
Favourite type of cake:
My favourite type of cake is a chocolate cake WITH chocolate chips in. The best, and I need those chips in there! Haha!

How could my baking day with Eric Lanlard not be one of my best cake-related memories?! Yummy cakes plus a yummy Frenchman, what’s not to love?! A whole day dedicated to baking with recipes from the master himself, time to chat, relax, have lunch and bake delicious goodies! I was in cake heaven.

Favourite type of cake:

My favourite cake is whatever your favourite cake is, because for me that’s what it’s all about. I love to bake for people. Personally, anything with chocolate floats my boat, but my husband is allergic to chocolate so I have branched out into flavours I wouldn’t have been drawn to myself, but I’m enjoying discovering new things.
My best cake memory has to be my pregnancy cravings. I suffered from terrible sickness right up to the day I had my boy, some days not even being able to keep any food or water down but, for some strange reason, the only thing my baby boy would let me eat was lemon cake (good lad!). Not even posh home-made lemon cake, but the cheap, shop bought Dan half moon cake. I couldn’t get enough of it, so it’s a good job they sold it at the 24 hour garage around the corner from my house! Cake for breakfast, cake for lunch, and cake for tea. You can’t deny a pregnant lady her cake! Some would say this is a bad memory, but a time when it’s acceptable to eat cake for every meal is a good memory to me!

Favourite type of cake:

My favourite type of cake has to be a good lemon sponge (not usually the Dan cake might I add) – no icing, no soggy gritty sugary drizzle stuff, just a plain old lemony sponge. Mmmmm!

Growing up, we were encouraged to cook with my Mum a lot. My brother was always making meatballs with her; I was more the pudding partner. I will never forget the first Victoria Sandwich we made together. The thrill of mixing all the ingredients, licking the spoon (which I still do today!), and the TWO cakes coming out of the oven, to be then sandwiched together with cream (my favourite food stuff when I was a child) and sticky jam! We delivered slices to our neighbours who made lots of yummy noises!
Favourite type of cake:
My favourite cake is anything with lemon in it: drizzle, shortbread, meringue pie, polenta cake, cheesecake. Mmmm!!

I had so many fantastic responses I decided to make this into a two-part feature.
Come back tomorrow for part two!
