Pregnant and Proud
Whilst at my wits end yesterday, after a rather frazzling and fraught afternoon of teething tears and separation anxiety issues, I decided to switch the TV on and turned to the trusty music channels for a fun bop along with Busby.
The new The Saturdays track was about to come on, and although I’m not a massive fan of The Saturdays I was looking forward to Busby realising that music was playing so she’d rock and sway… and stop crying. Anyway, whilst my daughter bopped I watched the video and, to my disgust, found that one of the girls (who is pregnant) had hidden her beautiful Bump behind all manner of objects.
I was angry.
This wasn’t the first time this has happened. This is going to make me sound like a The Saturdays fan girl (and seriously, I’m not), but in their video for the very illogical and rather backwards track “Gentleman” two of them were pregnant. Both Bumps were hidden. Their Bumps were also hidden on the 4Music promo for their US TV Show, this time behind huge “4” sculptures…?!
Everyone knows they are pregnant! Why are their Bumps being covered up?
Pregnancy is an amazing thing; the pregnant body is beautiful and definitely not something to be ashamed of, which is the impression I’m getting from these videos.
Bumps should not be hidden away; they should be out there for the world to see. Pregnant women should be celebrated; growing a baby inside of you is just the craziest, freakiest, hardest, most awesome experience!
I understand that record companies need to maintain a “sexy” image, but does being pregnant automatically exclude you from being sexy? No, it does not; Kate Middleton, Kate Hudson, Beyonce, to name a few, were all stunners when they were pregnant.
So, coming to the end of my rant, I would love to see a pregnant singer make a video and have their Bump on display for everyone to see because, let’s face it, a pregnant Bump makes (almost) everyone smile.
Ps. Join me on my mini-campaign to tell a pregnant lady she is beautiful.
