Inspiration Week // Vivienne’s Story

Five days in and I’m feeling inspired – how about you?

Today I’m joined by photographing Mama, Vivienne… with a gorgeous womb-flipping photo to keep your broody levels topped up!

Vivienne is a natural light photographer based in Aberdeen, specialising in newborn and baby portraiture. Her work is natural, relaxed and captures the unique personality of every child.

Toby was just shy of three months old when I first picked up my husband’s camera and thought “right, how do you work this?” I switched it from automatic to manual mode, and spent an afternoon photographing Toby. From that moment I was hooked, and I was very lucky to have such a cute and willing model to practice on.

A few months on, and after studying hard in the short few hours break I got between Toby going to bed and me following him, I offered to photograph the babies of my mummy friends, to build a portfolio and explore whether photography was something I could pursue. Thankfully, they were all willing volunteers and I was delighted to receive positive feedback from them when they saw their images. With a gentle push from my husband and friends, I decided to put myself out there and offer my services to the general public. I was delighted to receive bookings off the back of my portfolio sessions, and Vivienne Elizabeth Photography was launched in July last year.

At around the same time, I joined the Society of Wedding and Portrait Photographers, and am now working towards qualification with them and The Guild of Photographers. I am constantly striving to achieve more, learn more, and push myself beyond my comfort zone, so submitting my images to experienced photographers for critique is part of that. Hopefully 2014 will be the year I achieve a qualification, and can finally put some letters after my name!
I adore working with all the babies I have had the pleasure to meet and their families. I aim to make them feel as comfortable as possible during the session, with safety one of my utmost concerns. Newborns are my absolute favourite part of my work – being asked to capture those important details of a new family’s precious wee bundle is such an honour.

2014 has started off well, with the purchase of new equipment (I have turned into a camera and lens geek!), mentoring sessions booked and a fast filling diary. I am grateful for the fact that I was given the opportunity to explore my creative side whilst I was on maternity leave, and further delighted when it meant I could hand in my notice to my old work. I am still trying to figure out the work/life balance, and trying to ensure we get enough family time at weekends as well as doing sessions, but I suspect that is the case for all working mums! But when you love what you do, it often doesn’t feel like work. One thing on my list for 2014 is to make more time to photograph Toby if he will let me – he often wants to ‘help’ rather than let Mummy take his picture! Without him, Vivienne Elizabeth Photography wouldn’t exist – so I owe my mischievous and bright toddler a very big thank you.

Gorgeous! Thanks so much Vivienne!

Tomorrow is the penultimate day of Inspiration Week and I’m joined by another fabulous Mama who turned her life around thanks to Motherhood.

This series has been so inspiring! I’m considering a career change at the moment (without the bundle-of-joy part quite yet) and hearing about how each of these women has turned their life around is brilliant 🙂 xxx
