Travel // Our Anniversary Weekend in the Lake District
Nick and I celebrated our second wedding anniversary at the end of September! Woohoo! It’s been quite the year, but we made it!
We decided to go away for the weekend (sans children) to our favourite place: the Lake District. Some of you may remember it’s where we spent our amazing foodie Honeymoon, and although we didn’t end up at L’enclume this time (sadly), we still had a wonderful weekend away.
On the Saturday we left the children and headed up to the Lakes. I’d seen that there was a food festival on in Cockermouth so we headed that way. We had a lovely wander around the stalls, found some delicious pies to eat, and then went for a coffee at a fab little artisan cafe off the main high street called The Coffee Kitchen.
Once we felt full, we drove to Grasmere, which is my favourite place in the Lake District and it’s where our hotel was situated.
We stayed at the Oak Bank Hotel, as we’d had one of our favourite meals there while on Honeymoon but had previously stayed in the hotel next door. The interior of the hotel itself needs a lick of paint, but the exterior is beautiful and the evening food is fantastic.
We had treated ourselves to the Foodie Package which meant we had the ground floor suite, champagne on arrival, dinner both nights and breakfast both mornings. Bliss!
We got stuck into the champagne before going for a walk around Grasmere and visiting the famous Grasmere Gingerbread shop (which we had as our favours on our wedding day).
After our walk we came back and got ready for dinner. Unfortunately I don’t have any photos of the food as didn’t want my DSLR at the table, but it was amazing! We had the tasting menu on the first night – utterly divine.
We were awake fairly early on the Sunday morning, so went for a walk up to my favourite National Trust property – Allan Bank House! It’s such a gorgeous house with lots to do for adults and children a-like. I honestly wish I could live there – it’s just perfect.
After a morning at Allan Bank, we were starting to feel quite peckish so we went for a late lunch at The Drunken Duck Inn. Nick’s parents went there on their Honeymoon, so we like to visit when we’re in the Lakes. We shared possibly the most delicious sandwich and chips!
Dinner was fantastic that night too – and we were feeling very full by the end!
The weather was a bit pants on Monday, so we decided to visit Booths supermarket in Keswick for prosecco (it’s seriously the best prosecco I’ve ever tasted!), and then onto the Lakes Distillery. I’m so glad we visited as we went on a fabulous tour and tasted some delicious gin! I’d definitely recommend a visit if you’re in the area (it’s just between Cockermouth and Keswick).
We had a fantastic weekend away, but I must admit that I did miss the children quite a lot! I’m already looking forward to returning to the Lakes next June, and would love to hear if you have recommendations for places to visit with the children? We’ll be staying near Ambleside.
