Monkey Music celebrates 21 years!

Friday mornings are always a highlight in our weekly schedule thanks to our Monkey Music class in Lewes. We’ve been attending Monkey Music for almost a year now, and thoroughly enjoy every second of it!

What is Monkey Music?
For those of you who haven’t heard of Monkey Music before it’s a fantastically fun, progressive and educational four stage music class for preschool children. By the time children ‘graduate’ at age 4 they have a sound base from which to build a musical future. Many Monkey Music students have gone onto learn instruments to a very high standard and study music post-school.

Monkey Music turns 21 this month!
To mark this special occasion, Monkey Music classes in Lewes, Uckfield and Crowborough will be hosting a week of fun filled birthday party classes and competitions, sharing the magical fun and learning of Monkey Music with local families. This will be the week commencing 16th June 2014, and Laura and her team would love you to come and join in the fun!

As well as celebrating Monkey’s 21st birthday, the Monkey Music team will be using the month of June to raise some money and support two fantastic charities:
Monkey Music’s National Charity Partner – Nordoff Robbins: a national music charity dedicated to transforming the lives of vulnerable children and adults across the UK through music therapy.
Local charity, the Crowborough Birthing Unit, which is an amazing 24 hour midwife-led service for women who wish to give birth out of the hospital environment in a safe and nurturing space.

There will be lots of amazing prizes up for grabs (find out more on the Monkey Music website), as well as a half-price discount for families joining Monkey Music during party week!

Why do we love Monkey Music?
As I’ve said above, our class is always a highlight in our week. As a very musical person I knew I wanted Busby to attend a music class, and she adores Monkey Music. We started when she was around 9 months old in the Rock’n’Roll class and have now progressed to Heigh-Ho, which is for age 1-2.

Laura Dobson is our incredibly dedicated teacher (and Principal of our local area). She is always full of enthusiasm and we all have such a giggle together. Our class feels like a community; Busby and I have met some wonderful Mamas and babies, some of whom we now meet socially.

As well as increasing Busby’s confidence, our Monkey Music classes have helped my confidence. I’m starting to enjoy singing in a public forum again, something I haven’t done since University, and socially it has allowed me to meet other local parents – which has been great as I didn’t know anyone when we first moved here when I was 8.5 months pregnant!

Every week is different; there is so much variety that we never feel like we’ve attended the same class twice. Laura uses songs and tunes that are well-known or easy to pick up so that everyone can join in no matter how long you’ve been attending.

Each class lasts 30 minutes and we manage to pack plenty in! The children get to cuddle monkey, move to music (parent participation is required here), play with a whole variety of instruments from maracas to drums to “magic sounds”, and then the class always ends with bubbles to music (usually from a famous musical) and stickers. Laura constantly interacts with both parent and child, and there’s never an opportunity to get bored! If anything the classes could be slightly longer as Busby really starts to get going about halfway through… and could probably keep going for another 30 minutes!

I would definitely recommend Monkey Music to any parent looking for a musical class for their preschooler. We always have so much fun and I can’t wait to see what the next two years of classes will hold.
