Pregnancy // Pregnancy Insomnia – why are you so cruel? (A poem)

pregnancy insomnia poemSo here I lie,
Tossing and turning,
A good night of sleep,
Is all that I’m yearning!
I’ve finished my book,
The sixth on my Kindle,
It’s three in the morning,
And my patience has dwindled.
Why can’t I sleep?
My mind keeps whirring,
My body is aching,
My eyes are a-blurring.
But still I can’t reach,
That ultimate goal,
Of a full night of sleep,
To make me feel whole.
Why doesn’t my body,
Seem to understand,
That in a few months time,
We’ll be back in “Newborn Land”;
The land where we wake,
On the dot every hour,
The land where we can’t
Even take a shower.
The land where a steaming
Hot cup of tea,
Or anything caffeinated,
Is a rarity.
The land where sleep
Is accompanied by a tiny
Human being,
Who’s all new and shiny,
Who doesn’t quite grasp
The idea of night,
The idea that sleep,
Is a precious delight.
So Body I beg,
Please let me sleep,
Please let’s not fight,
I’ll even count sheep.
Off I go,
Into the depths,
Closing my eyes,
Long, deep breaths.

No I’m still here,
I’m still wide awake,
I’m looking out the window,
Watching dawn break.
My Husband beside me,
Snoring away,
And here I am,
At the start of the day.
Maybe I’ll be lucky,
And sneak in a nap,
This afternoon,
Before I snap?
Oh Body, why,
Why can’t I slumber?
Without it tomorrow,
My day you’ll encumber.
Pregnancy Insomnia,
You are dastardly cruel,
Perhaps tomorrow night,
The sleep I shall rule.

    Lovely poem!
I suffered awful pregnancy insomnia when I was carrying my daughter, it really is horrid. Hope you get some sleep soon! Xx

Great poem! I found the most irritating thing about pregnancy insomnia was when people told me to ‘bank my sleep’ for when the newborn arrives. Grrr. x

So nice… reminds me when I was pregnant
