Review // toTS by SmarTrike, Chic Grey Mélange Changing Bag

tots smartrike changing bagFinding a changing bag that will fit two bears worth of ‘stuff’ in has proved quite the task since H-Bear arrived last June. I have to admit that when the toTs changing bag first arrived, I looked at it and thought “There’s absolutely no way that I’m going to be able to fit everything I need into this bag.” but a month later I am eating my words.

The toTs changing bag is deceptively big. In fact, it’s akin to Mary Poppin’s bag. It can easily fit everything I need for both children for the day in it (and zip up still!). I took it with us to Italy, and it was perfect for day trips, with no need for any extra bags.

I could probably wax lyrical all day about this bag, as there are so many aspects of it that I love! It just works; it’s such a wonderfully well-thought out changing bag.

Everything from the insulated pockets on both sides of the bag, which are not just for bottles – they’re the ideal size and shape for both children’s water bottles, and the insulation stops them getting too warm if it’s a hot day (not many of those in the UK at the moment – but it was very useful in Italy!).

Not only does the bag have these two insulated pockets, it also comes with a matching separate insulated bottle holder, which retains heat magnificently! I’ve been so impressed with it when we’ve used it for H-Bear’s milk.

The separate, matching bag for nappies has been so useful – and I’ve used it as a stand-alone bag for popping underneath the pushchair, or in the trike basket, if we’re going out for a short walk and I don’t want to take the whole bag with us. It’s spacious, with lots of pockets too – so very useful for spare clothes. I’ve also used the pockets to store sanitary products; making it subtle to take to the toilet with me if we’re out for lunch. The spare bag poppers into the changing bag too, which keeps it secure.

Talking of pockets, the toTs changing bag is full of them! My favourite pocket is the hidden one at the front of the bag, which is where I keep my phone. It’s easily accessible for when I need to whip out my phone quickly for photos, and means I’m not rooting around looking for it.

The toTs changing bag comes with pram straps, which are matching (hooray!) and no velcro is involved (another hooray!). The clips do get a little stuck if you’re in a hurry to remove the bag, but otherwise it’s a system that works well.

“But I baby-wear!” I hear you cry. Well, so do I and this bag has padded rucksack straps in the back pocket to convert into a comfy rucksack, so you can baby-wear and still use the bag.

My Brother-in-Law even had a turn wearing it in Italy when our hands were full with the children.

Another thing that has really impressed me is the key clip. It’s a very small feature, but unlike in other bags I’ve tried, it’s so accessible and I’m not having to root around in the bag to find it.

Finally, the bag is beautiful. I love the grey mélange fabric, which is showerproof (very useful considering the rain seems to feature heavily so far this spring/summer), and is neutral enough to go with various pushchairs and outfits. It’s also neutral enough that Nick doesn’t feel out of place using it. Equally, it’s very much like a handbag, and I will probably still use it as one when the kids are older and I don’t need to take out a bag of nappies and snacks.

The only thing that has disappointed me about this changing bag is the changing mat. The toTs bag is £64.99, so is in the medium price range for a changing bag, and I would expect something more than a piece of padded white plastic. That being said a) it works perfectly fine, and b) looking on the Smyths website, I think they may have updated the mat since my bag arrived, as it seems to match the rest of the bag now.

It’s not often that I’m sent something to review and instantly think “Wow!” but since our toTs changing bag arrived just over a month ago, I have been in awe. It’s an absolutely fantastic changing bag, and one that I would definitely recommend if you’re looking for a stylish changing bag to cater for two or more children (there’s also plenty of space if you just have the one child!). You can buy the toTs SmarTrike changing bag from the Smyths website for £64.99.
