Busby and I love baking together, so when the fabulous folk at Cadbury set us the rather delicious task of baking an owl cake (with LOTS of scrummy Cadbury chocolate), we couldn’t wait to get (egg) cracking and #FreetheJoy.
We were given a yummy, basic chocolate sponge recipe to work from, which was very easy to follow. You can find the recipe over on the Huffington Post here. It gave Busby the opportunity to do lots of counting, weighing and measuring! We had fun putting the ingredients in the mixer… with Busby trying to eat everything that passed under her nose (even unsalted butter… yuck)!
Once the cake was in the oven, she got round to the best part of baking – licking out the bowl!
We left the cake to cool for an hour or so, and then I made an owl shape template out of greaseproof paper… I felt a bit like I was on the Great British Bake Off, which was a fairly exciting feeling! I then made a beautifully shiny ganache (my first ever attempt too – perhaps I should enter GBBO?!) and covered the owl in the yummy, gooey icing before Busby and I started the very important task of decorating… with button munching to keep our energy up during the difficult task.
What do you think? My mum thought we’d baked a cat, but I think it’s pretty owl-like!
The cake was absolutely delicious too (it went VERY quickly), and it’s such an easy recipe to follow and bake, that I’m looking forward to making it all over again and perhaps trying a different animal!
I think it definitely looks like an owl and I can vouch for the fact that it was absolutely delicious. Xx
