Just before Christmas, Busby and H-Bear were sent a gorgeous puppy each from Tilly + Cub.
The toys are made by women in Kenya for an incredibly special project called Kenana Knitters, which has provided an income for over 500 women so far. The project has empowered women to support themselves and their families; funding education for their children, and healthcare.
Many of the women involved in creating the toys cannot read or write, so the patterns have been memorised. They are often woven whilst walking to fetch water, and in near darkness. The wool is spun on bicycle wheels and the cotton is grown to organic standards.
Tilly + Cub’s founder, Jo, first discovered the toys a couple of years ago when she bought one for her daughter Tilly. She was so blown away by this wonderful project that she was determined to bring them to the UK, and stock them in her gorgeous online store.
We were sent a Coco the Puppy and a Wilbur the Puppy for the children. The puppies are available in two sizes: 30cm and 15cm.
Busby and H-Bear have loved playing with the puppies! Bertie has also rather enjoyed his attempts to play with them – taking them off the sofa when the children have been distracted.
I love how soft and pliable the toys are; perfect for imagination play because they can sit up, wave and even enjoy a cup of (imaginary) tea.
The toys come in a range of different animals – from snow leopards (definitely my favourite) to elephants.
Wilbur the Puppy (30cm) costs £21 and Coco the Puppy (15cm) costs £16, and both are available to buy on the Tilly + Cub website. They would make the most gorgeous presents for newborns and toddlers alike.
