Motherhood // 5 Handy Sleep Tips For New Mothers

As a new mother it’s not always easy to get a good night’s rest, and over time this can impact on your physical and mental health. To ease the strain and improve your sleep, try taking on board these five handy sleep tips.

1 . Nap When Your Baby Sleeps

As a sleep-deprived new mother, it’s important to sneak in a nap anywhere you can! If your baby has kept you up at night, but drifted off in the day, take the opportunity to have a nice nap yourself. Of course, it might not be possible to do this on every occasion, especially when juggling other commitments. The key is, don’t be afraid to ask for help if you need it. Whether from family members, friends, or neighbours, a support network is essential.

2. Try Sleep Apps

Life as a new mum is full of magical moments, plus times of stress. When you’re feeling stressed out, this may impact your ability to drift off (even when you’ve got the opportunity)! To help you get some shut-eye, consider trying one of the following sleep apps.

Headspace: Headspace is one of the leading apps for mindfulness and meditation, and there are also plenty of sleep-based audios. Simply pick yourself a sleep soundtrack, put your headphones in, lay down, and let the app do the rest.

Slumber: Using the Slumber app, you can access lots of different ‘sleep stories’ and sleep activities, designed to promote a restful sleep. The app also provides meditation, background ambiance, and sleep activities for children.

3. Herbal Teas

Herbal teas are the perfect way to relax before going to sleep. With a healthy hot drink before bed time, you may find that it’s easier to relax and drift off. There are so many delicious herbal teas to choose from, whether it’s chamomile, passionflower, or peppermint. Some like to add a dash of honey, for a slightly sweeter and less earthy taste. For a real easy and simple way to ease sleep deprivation, herbal teas are the way to go.

4. Video Baby Monitors

Video baby monitors can be a useful tool to support your nighttime routine. By looking at the monitor footage, you can assess whether you need to intervene, or if you can allow your baby to try and settle back down by themselves.

When you’re shopping for your baby supplies there are plenty of other safety products you might want to consider whether baby gates, window shades, or healthcare grooming kits. Baby shops are the best place to look, or check out some second-hand apps if you’re looking to save a little money.

5. The Perfect Sleep Setting

When you’re feeling a little deprived of sleep it’s important to create yourself the perfect sleep setting. Doing so will help to improve the quality of your sleep. Start by getting yourself a memory foam mattress that perfectly supports your body as you rest. Next, add ‘blackout’ blinds, to create total darkness in the room. Thirdly, certain scents be helpful for relaxation, such as jasmine or rose. You can purchase these essential oils in the form of sprays, to use in your room or to scent your pillow.
