How to survive Baby’s first day at Nursery (for Parents)

Gosh. How did we fill our days pre-baby? Busby started Nursery for real this week and I found myself with a whole day to myself. I had to stick around the house just in case she had a mini meltdown and needed picking up early! It got me thinking though – how am I going to survive a whole day alone, when I’m worrying about my baby?

Here are my top tips for surviving the day with a baby at Nursery:

Keep yourself busy!
The most important thing! Don’t spend the day looking through photos of Baby as a newborn, or sneaking down to the Nursery and trying to peer through the windows. Do things for you! Or for your home.

Cake
We didn’t have any cake in the house, but we did have some immense crumble that Nick had made at the weekend. I’m going to say that crumble is healthier than cake anyway (full of fruit), and definitely part of your five a day!

Do everything you can’t do with a baby in your arms.
Blog. Watch a whole episode of Homes Under the Hammer with a hot cup of tea. Craft. Read. Oh the possibilities are endless. You could also do some jobs around the house. Snore.

Tea.
As mentioned above, get as much of the stuff down your throat while it’s still hot. Not too hot mind.

Try not to mope.
I gave myself about 15 minutes of crying time before I made myself a cup of tea and put on a load of washing. Moping will only make you feel worse.

Have a friend over.
As I said, I wasn’t able to go more than 15 minutes away from home, but if you have friends with babies, or friends who work shifts, invite them over. You’ll be able to chat away freely without worrying that little ears might be picking up on words they shouldn’t.

Set yourself a project.
I’ve got a few weeks of hanging around the house ahead of me, so I’ve set myself some projects. For example, we have some chest of drawers that need painting, and a table that needs stripping, sanding and painting.

Get your Other Half to take annual leave.
This is our plan for next week! A whole day together… alone! Wowza. We’re going to be sorting out the garden though, but still, I’m sure we’ll be able to have a hot cup of tea simultaneously!

So in conclusion, drink lots of hot tea, eat cake and enjoy some alone time! It’s a shock at first, but actually I quite enjoyed my day as a housewife! I even managed a quick hoover!

Lol, I remember dropping Em off at the childminder for her introductory day, before I went back to work, and having not had a day alone, since she was born, not quite knowing what to do with myself or my time! Funny, now, I manage to fill any child free time quite fast! Good tips there! Hope she had a good first day?

She had a great first day thanks 🙂 I didn’t have to collect her early and there were only a few tears!!

It takes a while to get back into the swing of being alone for a period of time! xx

Sadly I was one of those mothers who had to collect early from Pre-School. We finally cracked it on the last week of term so God knows what will happen when he restarts in Sep!

When I put my eldest in nursery for the first time I expected to be a wreck, but actually found myself quite relaxed when it came to it. My fourth child starts playgroup with the new term and I’m anxious about her settling - although I won’t have much time to worry once she’s in because I still have a baby at home. That will be the biggy - sending my smallest one to nursery. Then I really won’t know what to do with myself, as by then it will have been ten years of small children at home! I’m glad your little one settled okay.

Oh it’s just such a hard day isn’t it! We seem to go through waves where it’s brilliant and waves where it’s really hard.

Thanks so much for sharing at the Friday Baby Shower - I have featured you this week, Alice @ Mums Make Lists x
