Motherhood // The First Night Away (A poem)

So off we go,
With a wave goodbye.
“Are you crying?”
“Nope” *sob* “…there’s something in my eye”
But as we drive away,
The realisation sets in,
There’ll only be two of us in bed,
And we can have a lie in!!!
I can eat my own food,
I can have a hot cup of tea,
I won’t have an audience,
When I need to pee!
 I can wear a t-shirt that
Won’t be covered in breadstick goo,
And jeans that are clean
From snot and baby poo!
We can talk about grown-up matters;
Politics, literature, food…
We can listen to the Avenue Q soundtrack,
And use words that are rude!
“I’ll just make sure
Everything is ok at home…”
I say whilst anxiously
Looking at my phone.
“It’s only been 30 minutes!”
He gently mocks me.
But I don’t hear him,
I’m scrolling through photos of baby.
“Do you think they’re ok?”
I repeat every hour or so.
“What do you think they’re doing?”
And “Off to bed they go!”
We spend most of dinner,
Talking about our brood.
Although it is rather nice,
To eat piping hot food!
In bed by 10pm,
Collapsed in an exhausted heap.
There’s no room for sex here;
We need to maximise time to sleep.
We sleep like a baby.
Although ours doesn’t understand this phrase…!
Waking up in time for check-out,
But we could snooze for days.
Hot tea in bed and
No spectators on the loo.
Are you sure we can’t stay
For another night or two?
But back home we go,
Slightly refreshed, less bleary eyed,
Back to cuddles, kisses,
And a smile a mile wide.
“Mama!” he coos excitedly,
And munches on my nose,
Little pudgy hands explore my face,
Whilst I eat his chubby toes.
The eldest tells of adventures,
And fun without both of us,
Enjoying cuddles together,
She soaks up the extra fuss.
Time away is good for the soul,
Time away refreshes,
But returning to my baby bears,
Well, that is truly precious.

Hannah guess what? I’m having a night away a week today! God knows how E will fair without boobie milk but she will be in good supply of kisses with my mum and her brothers…. I’m so excited I could sing! H x

Beautiful poem Hannah, and all my wishes and thoughts if I was away. No spectators, a lie on, tea in bed. It would be nice but I’d miss them so much!

Ahhh my husband and I are exactly like this whenever we have a night away - always end up talking about Tyler and can’t wait to get back to him! It is good to refresh though, and catch up on sleep! xx

This sums it up perfectly. Husband and I are constantly joing about how we spend any time away talking about the kids and looking at photos of them!
