We swear by the Green People Children’s Sun Lotion as it’s ideal for sensitive skin. It’s absolutely perfect for H-Bear, as other suncreams bring him out in a rash on his face.
Green People’s founder, Charlotte, has just released some top tips for keeping your children safe in the sun, so I thought I’d share them with you in the hope that the rest of half term might be a little bit warmer than it has been today!
Top Sun Safety Tips
TIP 1 “Children are more susceptible to synthetic chemicals as their bodies are still developing, plus their skin has greater sensitivity to sunlight, so choosing a natural sun screen is really important. Pores that are blocked by waterproof chemical sun lotions can potentially lead to Prickly heat, instead of synthetic pore-clogging ingredients Green People use Beeswax and Berry Wax to naturally repel water without blocking sweat glands.”
TIP 2 “Using the right amount of sun lotion is really important, about 10-15ml depending on the child’s size for every 2 hours they are in the sun. Research indicates that under-applying significantly reduces the SPF achieved and the higher the SPF rating the greater the reduction. Under-applying an SPF30 decreases protection to an SPF5.5, under-applying an SPF50 will decrease the protection to an SPF7”
TIP 3 “Did you know that an SPF50 sun lotion only filters out 1% more UVB light than SPF30? SPF ratings higher than 30 are sometimes used by sun care companies as a marketing tool, and may mislead consumers about what level of protection that products actually offer. Higher SPF ratings can encourage people to spend longer in the sun, on the assumption that the higher factor will protect them for longer. However, an SPF rating says nothing about the protection from UVA rays, which cause the longer-term, deeper cell damage, and by prolonging sun exposure times higher SPF sun lotions may increase UVA-caused skin damage.”
The children were sent a 150ml tube of Sun Lotion SPF30 (£18.50) – and a handy, smaller 30ml tube for the changing bag. As I’ve said above, it’s absolutely perfect for H-Bear’s sensitive skin.
We were also sent a tube of the Organic Children Lotion and After Sun (£11.50 for 200ml), which I have been using since getting rather pink at Big Weekend on Sunday… it smells so good and, as it’s made with aloe vera, it instantly soothes. It’s also kind to skin that suffers from eczema and psoriasis, so it will be ideal to use on H-Bear as well, who suffers from eczema behind his knees.
