Bertie has been living with us for three months now, and is well and truly part of the family! Since he’s been in our house, I’ve noticed a lot of similarities between him and H-Bear… and it’s got me thinking – are puppies just the spirit animals of toddlers?
1. Neither have any regard for your personal space.
So first up – personal space awareness… or rather, lack of. They clamber all over you as you try to enjoy that one sacred cup of tea after you finish hoovering the house. They follow you to the toilet and become the audience some shows at the Edinburgh Fringe wishes they had. They giddily bump into you while you’re carrying loads of laundry to and from the machine.
2. They want whatever you’re eating.
I just want to eat my sandwich in peace. Please. No… don’t give me those eyes!
3. The puppy-dog eyes.
Named so for a reason. Both toddlers and puppies have perfected the big puppy-dog eyed “Please give me your bacon sandwich” look. And it’s a look that’s hard to resist.
4. Toilet Training.
Puppy pads. Pottys. Pull ups. Both toddlers and puppies require toilet training – and both are as messy as each other. Bertie pooped in the bath this week. H-Bear took his full (dirty) nappy off while I was downstairs making dinner and tried to clean his bum with a towel. I’m not sure which one was worse.
5. They’re both fussy about their drinking vessels.
Currently, one of the only things Bertie will drink out of is the children’s small plastic purple teacup from their tea set. H-Bear has to have an orange, blue or green cup. Sigh – what’s wrong with a dog bowl and ANY colour cup?!
6. Puddles are for jumping in.
And leaves are for chasing. As are squirrels. Snowflakes are for trying to catch on your tongue or your nose. Mud is for squelching through – and the dirtier you get, the better.
7. They can never have enough cuddles.
Both need oodles of cuddles – and you’re more than happy to oblige.
Awww, I really would love to get a dog, I think that pets are so important and I loved having a dog when I was younger. I totally agree with you that the are the same!
Oh but they are both utterly adorable right? I love thay Bertie will only drink from a specific cup!!
Ha Ha I had never really thought about it before, but it’s so true. Bertie is so cute, it makes me want to get another dog!
