I can’t believe half term is next week! Despite January lasting for what felt like 12 whole months, it has been a very short half of a term.
We have lots of fun things planned, including Busby and I’s usual day out together (I think we’re going to see The Greatest Showman at the cinema this time!). My mum is coming to stay for the second part of half term, and I’ve been thinking of fun places we could go in and around the East Riding.
I’ve put a little list together below of fun activities that are free – or at least very cheap – to keep the week ticking over:
1. Explore the free museums
Hull has lots of fantastic free museums. We love visiting the Street Life Museum of Transport (the trains are H-Bear’s favourite). We haven’t visited the Hull & East Riding museum yet – so that’s on my list for next week. Rumour has it there’s a woolly mammoth inside!
2. Spend the morning/afternoon on Humber Street.
Humber Street is our favourite place to explore in Hull. We love the art galleries (which are free), having a wander around the marina, and then stopping in at Thieving Harry’s for a latte and big bowl of chips!
3. Visit The Deep
The Deep isn’t free on your initial visit, but once you’ve paid your entrance fee you can visit as many times as you like throughout the year for no extra cost. The Deep is such a beautiful aquarium – and they have penguins… what more could you want from a day out?
4. Take in some culture at Ferens Art Gallery
Ferens Art Gallery is another place we haven’t had a chance to visit yet, but have heard great things about. The gallery apparently has a fantastic children’s area and cafe. Plus they hosted last year’s Turner Prize.
5. Go for walk
It might sound obvious but there are so many gorgeous walks around here! From the Humber Bridge Foreshore, to a wander through the Country Park, to the woods in North Ferriby.
Thwaite Hall in Cottingham is open to the public on Fridays (entrance through the Friends of Thwaite Hall gardeners entrance), and is a gorgeous walk. Don’t forget to take food for the ducks and geese!
Beverley Westwood is a fab walk too.
6. Visit a park
Hull has quite a few lovely parks. East Park has a small zoo, Pickering Park has a lovely big pond, and Pearson Park has the Victorian Conservatory which houses reptiles.
Walkington also has a wonderful park next to the playing fields – and some great dog walks around.
7. Go to the beach.
The East Yorkshire coast is incredible. You can get the train from Hull to Bridlington in 45 minutes, and the beach is beautiful. We love Fraisthorpe, Mappleton and Barmston to visit as they’re generally quiet and dog-friendly.
8. Snowdrop Walk at Burton Agnes Hall
I’m hoping we’ll be able to visit the Snowdrop Spectacular at Burton Agnes Hall before it finishes on 4th March (the photos would be amazing and Busby is obsessed with snowdrops at the moment)! An entrance fee to the gardens applies.
9. Robin Trail at the Humber Bridge Country Park
East Riding Council are holding a robin trail around the country park to discover more about Britain’s favourite bird on 13th February. Booking details are in the link above and the trail costs £2.50 per child.
What do you have planned for half term?
