Motherhood // Mother’s Day with St Stephen’s, Hull

What does your perfect Mother’s Day look like? Mine involves a lie in, copious amounts of hot tea, and probably a visit to the cinema with my clan to see The Greatest Showman (again).

It sounds like other Hull mums are also in for a treat too! A survey of over 2,000 people by British Land, owner of St Stephen’s shopping centre in the city, found that Hull residents will spend an incredible £1m on pamper products, £980,000 on greetings cards and £388,000 on breakfast in bed.

Yesterday, the lovely folk at St Stephen’s invited me along to spend the afternoon at the shopping centre ahead of Mother’s Day. I took my friend, and fellow mum, Megan along with me as she more than deserved a lunch out and child-free wander around the shops.

(By the sounds of it, all local mums deserve a treat; half of mothers in the survey admit to having less than an hour’s ‘me time’ each day.)

We started our afternoon by heading straight to Zizzi for lunch. Megan is vegan and they make incredible vegan pizzas, plus it’s a gorgeous (relatively) new restaurant in the shopping centre.

Our conversation is usually interrupted on playdates by our children wanting snacks, so it was wonderful to be able to sit down and chat (with a cheeky glass of prosecco) without having to cut up someone else’s pizza, or whip out the baby wipes!

After lunch, we made our way downstairs to the huge Tesco. Yellow roses are my favourite flowers, so I bought a couple of bunches as a treat to cheer up our house in this grey weather.

We had a look through the vast selection of Mother’s Day gifts, and Megan was quite excited by the dairy-free Baileys!

According to the survey, traditional gifts such as greetings cards (60%), flowers (50%) and chocolates (26%) top the list of this year’s most popular Mother’s Day presents. However, some Hull mums are hoping their children say ‘thank you’ in other ways, with one in five (20%) wanting to unwrap their favourite perfume… and one in ten hoping for a bottle of gin!

As I work from home, I pretty much live in my pyjamas until I need to do the school run! So, a new pair of pyjamas will always be a winning present for me. Another friend had drawn my attention to Peacocks’ range of matching Mother and Daughter llama pyjamas on Instagram last week, so I couldn’t resist a cheeky visit while we were shopping.

Aren’t they amazing? Sadly they didn’t have Busby’s size, but I bought a pair of mum pjs for myself (I’m wearing them now as I type!).

Despite our lovely relaxing afternoon, Motherhood never truly leaves you in total peace, and the school run beckoned! So we quickly ran into The Body Shop because I can’t resist their rose perfume, before heading back to the car.

A huge thank you to St Stephen’s for giving us the opportunity to have an early Mother’s Day treat! The child-free lunch and proper catch-up was so appreciated.
