Did you know that babies in the womb start to hear from around 16 weeks gestation? And that they can begin to recognise and respond to your voice from around 24 weeks? I think Bun is going to be very familiar with the exasperated phrase: “Oh, H-Bear!” by the time she arrives… She already adores the sound of Busby and H-Bear laughing; kicking and wiggling away when she hears them giggling, so I have a feeling they’re going to be firm friends from the moment she enters the world!
Wonderful baby brand Mum & You have just launched a new app called Nappychat. Nappychat is a free app to help you “Chat, Sing and Share” with your baby.
The team at Mum & You have created the app after concluding that the first 1000 days of a child’s life are vital to brain and language development. By talking and communicating with your baby, you can not only increase their brain development, but strengthen the bond between you too. This also applies to chatting, singing and sharing with your baby while they’re still growing in your womb.
The app is full to the brim with stories, poems and songs to help you bond and share together. And it’s not just for parents to download and enjoy – anyone who spends time with your child can download the free app and join in as well!
The app’s design is bright and inviting, with calming blues and fun characters – both animals and weather-related.
When you first download and launch the app, Yip the dog pops up and asks whether you need some help looking around and getting to grips with the app. I think this is great for first time and/or less-tech savvy users, and definitely makes it more accessible.
There are two sections within the app to explore:
- Stories and Poems
- Playtime
Both have age options within the sections:
- 0-9 months
- 9-18 months
- Over 18 months
Stories and Poems
As one would expect, the Stories and Poems section has lots of stories and poems… and songs! The Mum & You app uses their lovely characters to illustrate each story/poem/song, utilising classic tunes and rhymes to new lyrics and words.
There’s also a ‘Classics’ section, which has many poems that you will remember from your own childhood.
Playtime
Playtime is full of age-appropriate fun activities to share together. I love this section, as it’s great for inspiration! Especially in that stage of babyhood where your child is becoming more interactive, but you’re not quite sure what activities are appropriate… or you’re too sleep deprived to think!
Examples include ideas from Mum & You, such as co-bathing (which is still something I’ve never done, but will definitely be trying this time round!) and discovery baskets full of sensory bits and pieces from around the house. And ‘Classics’, like going for a walk in the park and tummy time.
All of the activities, poems, stories and songs can be selected as favourites and saved in your favourites folder for easy finding. You can also share these via WhatsApp, email etc.
I’ve been really impressed with the Nappychat app so far. It’s been lovely to try out a few songs with my bump, and I can’t wait to continue using it when Bun arrives. I love that it’s so user-friendly and has lots of inspiration for those parenting days that feel like they may never end! It’s a fantastic, free resource and I would recommend to anyone looking for a lovely app to help inspire them in early parenthood.
