Family Life // 5 Ways To Prepare For A Flight With A Baby

Every parent will have nightmares about taking their baby on the plane only for it to cry the entire time. This can create a very uncomfortable and stressful atmosphere on the plane and even stop some parents from flying with their little ones. Although there is no way to predict how your baby will be at the airport and on the plane, there are a few steps that you can take which should help to make the process much easier and smoother for everyone involved. So, if you have a fight coming up with your baby then read on for a few tips:

Preparation

First, you need to make sure that you are fully prepared and have everything that you need with you. Your child is much likely to be calm and relaxed if you are, so pack everything that you need the night before. Have all of your documentation readily available at all times, and give yourself plenty of time to get through the airport. If possible, book the light at a quiet time and, if you can, pick seats on the end and near the front with as much space as possible.

Know The Rules

You will also need to know all of the rules and restrictions in terms of your flight and flying with a baby. This will include what age they need their own ticket, luggage limits, policy on breastmilk, and what to do with a buggy or car seat.

Baby Kit

You will need a kit for the baby to get through the flight and this will need to include items like nappies, wipes, spare clothing, toys, books and anything else that they might need and will serve as a good distraction. You also need to think about what you are going to do while waiting for the plane as this can be a lengthy wait. Hopefully, there will not be a delay or cancellation, but if there is you could file for compensation through a company like FairPlane which can be helpful and cover the costs which you may incur as a result of a delay.

Smooth Take Off & Landing

Take off, and landing are the parts that often cause the most distress due to the change in pressure. Keep this in mind and try to either have them napping during these times or use a dummy for them to suck on to alleviate the pressure change in their ear.

Plan To Be Courteous To Others

Many parents fear angering their fellow passengers and, unfortunately, some people do react badly to babies crying on a flight. You may find it helpful to be courteous to those around you, but do not feel too bad or panicked if your baby does cry and simply do what you can to stop them as soon as possible (if possible).

Flying with a baby will always be stressful and it is hard to predict how your child will behave throughout the flight. While this can make it daunting to fly with a baby, it should not put you off and the above are all effective ways to cope with the experience.
